Now that I have finished Charlotte’s Web I have a whole new look at the characters and the things that happen at the begging of the book. At the begging of the book, we saw how Fern and Wilbur were inseparable but that shortly ended when Mr. Arable told Fern that Wilbur could no longer stay in their household and they would have to sell him. Fern was sad about that but quickly came up with an idea for her to sell him to her uncle Mr. Zuckerman who lived right up the road from the Arable. This broke Fern and Wilbur’s heart but it had to be done.
When Wilbur moved Fern would come from school everyday, sit with Wilbur for hours, and just watch him play. To me Fern did not take the move that hard but Wilbur on the other hand was not doing to good. As I kept on reading, I read how Wilbur was very lonely and friendless. Wilbur was the youngest animal there, all the other animals acted harsh towards him, and he felt he would never find anyone like Fern. Wilbur just hung around his pigpen day after day with no one to talk to and nothing to do. Wilbur felt this way until one night in the dark he heard a voice of someone telling him that they would be his friend. In addition, to his surprise, it was a little spider name Charlotte. I think charlotte rather became Ferns replacement in Wilbur’s life since Fern was not there as much as she uses to be. Charlotte ended up becoming like a mother to little Wilbur and he was very grateful for her.
Through out the middle of the book Wilbur got some terrible news about what the Zuckerman’s planned to do when the Christmas holiday came around and Wilbur wasn’t to happy about it. Even though Wilbur dodged death ounce before he did not think he could do it again. Nevertheless, little did he know the little spider he met would come to his rescue. Some ideas I had about charlottes character through the middle and ending of the book was that she and Fern were very alike. Like for example how they acted like a mother figure to Wilbur. However, they also had many differences even thought Fern was like a mother figure charlotte was more of a mother figure. Charlotte came off as a wise mother figure she gave Wilbur very insightful suggestions he could use through out life. In addition, since Fern was still very young, she could not provide that for Wilbur. Towards the ending of the book like always in a child book everything turned out to be fine except for one little spin that I was very surprised by but of course your would have to read the book to find out.
After reading this book when I was done reading it, I felt very different then I felt when I read the first couple of chapters. To me this book taught me the gift of having family or friends who care for you and would do anything for you. It also taught me to be great full of the people in my life. Charlotte’s web is truly a childhood favorite.
